A Solar Lead Acid Battery Charger
WHAT IS IT USED FOR
Charge a small lead-acid battery from a solar panel
HOW DO I USE IT
Connect the 12V (18Vmp) solar panels to the inputs
Connect the output directly to lead-acid battery.
Red CR LED indicates charging
Green OK LED indicates complete.
You could use a 17V-28V DC power supply instead of Solar Panels

Recommended input voltage range is 17V – 30V (though lower voltages on grey days still charge)
Max output current 3.14A
This is a proper lead-acid charger that has modes for trickle charging, float (13,55V) and over-charge (14.8V) (see diagram in Pics)
This is based around the Consonance CN3767 Photovoltaic Cell Lead-Acid Battery Charger IC. Google that and you’ll get a datasheet which gives you very a clear and detailed description of how it will operate.

OBSERVATIONS
I have been using this for a few months with a small 20W solar panel to keep a 7Ah Lead-Acid Battery charger for use as a clean power supply for noise measurements. I really recommend it.
I have a power meter on the solar input (top in the box), the charger output (bottom in the box), and the battery use output (on the battery).
Looking at the photos, you can see for 8.2W being generated, it put 7.8W into the battery, giving a decent 95% efficiency.
The CN3767 says it tracks max power voltage (Vmp). It uses PWM for the switch mode converter to get it down to battery voltage. A bit confusing using the two terms together.
