Undervoltage Protection Switch and Charge Control Switch 30A

Original price was: £16.99.Current price is: £14.44.

This module operates in one of two Modes.  Undervoltage protection and Battery Charge protection.

  1. Undervoltage protection mode disconnects a load when the battery voltage is too low.
  2. Charge control mode connects a DC charger when the battery voltage is too low

This is NOT a battery charger or a power module – simply a switch.  See my other items for each of these.
This is NOT for use with mains.

Description

WHAT IS IT

This module operates in one of two Modes.  Undervoltage protection and Battery Charge protection.

  1. Undervoltage protection mode disconnects a load when the battery voltage is too low.
  2. Charge control mode connects a DC charger when the battery voltage is too low

This is NOT a battery charger or a power module – simply a switch.  See my other items for each of these.
This is NOT for use with mains.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR

  1. In undervoltage protection mode, you’d use it to disconnect a battery from something like an AVTEX TV in a motor-home when the battery voltage becomes low enough to cause damage to itself.
  2. In charge control mode, a lead-acid battery could automatically be connected to a charger to keep it topped up.

HOW DO I USE IT

The instructions for this unit are quite lengthy.  Details continue below.  Please read them all for the mode you want to use.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

Max current – 30 Amps
Max Voltage – 60 Volts DC.  NOT FOR USE WITH MAINS.
Consumes 70mA from the Charger in Charger Protection Mode, and 70mA from the battery in Undervoltage protection mode.
Panel cutout 71mm x 39mm.  There are two lugs on the side that will need accommodating.  See the side picture.

DELIVERY

Hermes or equivalent 3 day tracked courier.

SUPPORT

My support is second to none. I will gladly help you before or after purchase.  I love power supplies!

HOW DO I USE IT – The details

Toggle between modes by holding for 5 seconds.  P-1 is Charging Protection.  P-2 is Undervoltage Protection
Change settings in either mode by holding Set for 5 seconds
Toggle backlight off by holding for 5 seconds in either mode

Undervoltage Protection (OUT displayed)

This mode will turn off a load when the supplying battery voltage falls below a certain level.  There are optional parameters, but the two main ones are DN which is the battery voltage the switch will turn off and UP which is the voltage the battery must be above to turn back on.  This is so when the battery is disconnected and the voltage rises, it doesn’t immediately turn on again, indefinately.

For example, if DN=11.8V and UP=12.4V, and your battery is at 12.3V, and you have a Avtex 12V TV connected to your battery, the switch will allow the TV to be turned on and used until the battery discharges to 11.8V, when it will disconnect the battery from the TV.  If you charge the battery, when it raises above 12.4V, your switch will turn on allowing you to turn on the TV.

OP, if set above 00:00, will set a timer to switch off when the time expires (hh:mm).  DOP forces a delay before turning on and FOP forces a delay before turning off to help prevent rapid hysteresis.

UP = Set Load On voltage
DN = Set Load Off Voltage
OP = Turn off load in hh:mm
DOP = Delay On in seconds
FOP = Forced On in seconds

Tap to toggle between time remaining and battery voltage percentage.
Tap Set to cycle automatically through the turn off voltage (DN), the turn on voltage (UP), turn off timer (OP), the delay on and the forced on.  Tap again to return to normal.
Hold Set for two seconds to enable changing the parameters.  The load is disconnected while changing parameters.Use and to change the values, and Set to move to the next one.  Hold Set for two seconds to return to normal.
Tap to manually toggle the switch and override the unit- IF the battery is above the turn on voltage (UP).  This is a temporary disconnect switch you can use to turn off the appliance.

IN flashes while the appliance is connected to the battery, and a red led on the rear of the module illuminates.  When disconnected, OUT is steady, and OFF is displayed instead of the percentage/time remaining.  When the voltage falls below DN, the turn off voltage, the display will flash.  Tap ⇓ to stop it flashing.

If the timer is set, when the unit connects, the timer is started.  When it completes, one of two things happen.  If the voltage is less than the turn on voltage (UP), the unit will disconnect the load, wait for 30 seconds, then reconnect.  If the voltage is more than UP, if will leave connected, disable the timer, and flash H:ER (or H:EA).  I have no idea why it does this, and I’d recommend not using the timer in under voltage mode.  This text copyright Keith Marsh 2022.  If you’ve any idea what the idea is here, please let me know.

Charging Protection (IN displayed)

This mode will connect your battery charger to your battery when the battery falls below a set voltage (DN), and disconnects your charger when the battery raises above a set voltage (UP).  The unit is powered from the charger side only.

You use it to automatically put your battery on charge and remove it from charge between two operating voltages.  You can use it with any kind of battery and charger.

The unit normally shows the battery voltage, and the percentage of that value between the charge on (DN) and charge off (UP).

UP = Set Charger Off voltage
DN = Set Charger On Voltage
OP = Turn off charger in hh:mm
DOP = Delay Charger On in seconds

Tap to toggle between time remaining and battery voltage percentage.
Tap Set to cycle automatically through the turn on voltage (DN), the turn off voltage (UP), turn off timer (OP), the delay on and the forced on.

IN flashes while the charger is connected to the battery, and a red led on the rear of the module illuminates.  When disconnected, IN is steady, and the display flashes. Tap ⇓ to stop it flashing.

If the timer is set, when the charger connects, the timer is started.  When it completes, it disconnects the charger.  Id the voltage is above the charger on voltage DN, the charger remains disconnected.  If the batter is below DN, it will immediately reconnect and start the timer again.  If the voltage raises above the charger off voltage while the timer is running, the charger is disconnected.

If there is no battery on the OUT connections, the display will display nbE (No Battery Error) and refuse to function, though you can change settings.
